When People Misunderstand Song Meanings

"That's the greatest love song of all time!"

"What?"

"Umm, you know that song is about being stalked by an ex, right?"

"Oh, I didn't know that."

We all have misunderstand the meaning a songs, whether it's thinking The Beatles "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD or thinking  Aqua "Barbie Girl" just an innocent song about Barbie dolls.

The Police - Every Breath You Take

This isn't a love song. It's a song about being stalked by an ex-girlfriend.

Green Day – Wake Me Up When September Ends

The song is about Billie's father dying of cancer when he was only 10 years old, not about war or teenage angst.

Semisonic - Closing Time 

You all have hear this play at a bar at the end of the night, but this isn't a closing song, This song is about Parenthood and the birth of a child.

Megadeth – À Tout le Monde

Thought to be a Pro-Suicide Song. The song is actual about being on your deathbed and choosing your final words. "A tout le monde" is French for "To all the world" or "To everyone".

R.E.M. – The One I Love

Again, not a love song! The song is about using and manipulating people, It's an aniti-love song as said by R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe.

Nirvana - Rape Me

Nirvana's front man Kurt Cobain has said "Rape Me is an anti-rape song. It's about a guy who rapes a girl then goes to prison and gets raped himself".  This song is not from the prospective of the female victim.

Third Eye Blind - Semi-Charmed Life

This semi-charmed song is about meth. Yes, meth! Leader singer Stephan Jenkins said that he got the song idea from watching a person doing meth at a Primus concert.

Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.

Not as patriotic as you think it is. This song is about being born in a bad place, going to war, and releasing you have nothing to come back too. If anything is about being let down by the U.S.A.

James Taylor - Fire and Rain 

Most think this song is about Taylor's girlfriend dying in a plane crash. It's about Taylor's low points in life, heroin addiction, and his former band "Flying Machines".

Extreme - More Than Words

Nothing says sex like telling someone you love them. But for this song, it isn't the case. The lyrics are about how meaningless the words "I Love You" have become.

Pearl Jam - Alive

Is not the uplifting song you think it is. Eddie Vedder's own childhood experience about being told the truth about his real father. His father is actually his stepfather and that his biological dad is actually dead.

Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight

This is not about Collins' witnesses a person drowning and someone refusing to help them. It's about Collins expressing his emotions about his divorce.

The Vapors - Turning Japanese

Not a song about going cross-eyed during masturbation. The song is about loneliness during a break up and being upset or angry.

Lady Gaga - Poker Face

Not a song about gambling, nor keeping a straight face. Well not having a "Straight Face" because the song is about Bisexuality. Being with a men but fantasizing about being with a woman.

Alanis Morissette - Ironic

This song is literally a clever word trap. Events viewed as being the opposite of ironic, how tragic things aren't having no true irony. The lack of irony in a song called "Ironic" is ironic.

The Beatles - Ticket To Ride

This song has a much dirtier meaning than you would think. Definitely not about a girl leaving her lover. The song is about prostitutes who are clean and healthy.

Madonna - Like A Virgin

Most definitely a love song but not about sex. This song is about the feeling of falling in love again in a new relationship.

Filter - Hey Man, Nice Shot

Thought to be about the suicide of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. This song has a darker meaning being about R. Budd Dwyer. Dwyer, who committed suicide live on national television in 1987. Dwyer  was being indicted for bribery, but he claimed being framed.
